Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are usually the last four of 32 teeth to come through  making their appearance around the ages of 17 to 25. They are found at the back of the mouth on the top and the bottom.

In most cases, not enough space in the mouth does not allow the teeth to come through the gums properly and become fully functional. When this happens, the tooth can become stuck in the gums and bone in an potentially harmful position. If not treated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infection, damage to other teeth and possibly tumors or cysts.

Reasons to remove wisdom teeth :

If bone impaction of one or more wisdom teeth is present, and left untreated, a number of potential painful/ harmful consequences can occur,

  • Damage to nearby teeth: Second molars can be affected by impacted wisdom teeth, which can lead to cavities, gum disease and possibly bone loss.

  • Disease: Although not common, cysts and tumors can occur in the area around the  impacted tooth.

  • Infection: Bacteria and food can become trapped under the gum tissue, where an infection can occur. The infection can cause large amount of pain and possible danger.

  • Tooth Crowding: the teeth crowd and twist leaving you with an uneven smile, therefore you will need braces in the future.
